The GP Collaborative have partnered with a local physiotherapy provider, Surrey Physio, to place musculo-skeletal physiotherapists into 5 GP surgeries in Croydon. The GP surgeries that have taken part in the pilot are Keston Medical Practice, Brigstock Medical Centre, Selsdon Park Medical Practice, Farley Road Surgery and Portland Medical Centre.

The objective of the pilot is to look at new models for providing physiotherapy and MSK care, including exercise and wellbeing advice, to the local community in a closer-to-home setting and to reduce referrals into secondary care. The new service looks to provide high quality treatment and care of patients, while being affordable.

The service, led by Clinical Lead and Physiotherapist Tim Allardyce, ensures patients are treated within 4 weeks of referral from their GP surgery. Every patient is offered exercise advice, wellbeing coaching, and if appropriate, physical therapy to manage their musculo-skeletal condition.

Tim says “This is an exciting pilot to prove if the concept works, but the next stage would be scaling it up across Croydon to provide a super quality physiotherapy and MSK service. This would reduce secondary care referrals, be cost-effective, improve patient recovery, and Surrey Physio has the capacity and the local knowledge to do this. In partnership with the GP Collaborative, and with the support of the local GPs and CCG, I hope that this vision may become a reality”.

The pilot is trialing the usage of a self-care rehabilitation website that guides patients through the stages of their recovery with exercises, videos, a pain tracking management system and email prompts as they progress. You can view this website here.

Pilot Evaluation

An important part of implementing a Pilot is to ensure it is adequately evaluated so as to inform a Commissioning decision about how the future of care could, or should, be delivered. CGPC and colleagues from Croydon Physio have completed a mid-point evaluation video. This can be viewed here.
